For Florida cruisers, after a cold front, it's usually a shaky journey with a strong northern breeze curling between 20 and 25 nautical miles. If I had 10 points for every sea trial that was properly delayed due to unfavourable sea conditions, I could punish myself with the Ocean Alexander 100.
Ocean Alexander's newest model, the "100" Motoryacht, is a yacht boat in every respect. Designed by Evan K. Marshall in mind, the OA 100 was a natural progression of the OA 90, released in 2013. While the overall configuration and performance of the OA 100 is traditional, improvements to its volume and style clearly highlighted it.
As the boat enters the stern deck, it highlights two things: the habitat is scaled upwards to reflect the feeling of being on a larger ship, and the natural side light illuminates the inside by large side windows. According to Bruce Siler, representative of MarineMax, an Ocean Alexander dealer in Fort Lauderdale, Vibe, it's worth the attention of the ship owner, who has number one after 88 Ferretti; a luxurious look and feel.
In a long hall that uses each corner of the 23-metre beam of light, there is a specially designed cabinet in the dining area between the combination of light and dark fabrics. Stunning and functional storage for China, chalice, tableware, glassware and any items needed for long-distance cruising or rental. The ambience is reinforced by a wet rod built into the starboard side.
The marble counter top is a superyacht designed for the use of owners or rentals with state-of-the-art appliances and full-size cellars from Thermador, Fisher & Paykel, Viking, Whirlpool and Sub-Zero. It is possible to prepare a meal for seven people at a time, and Ocean Alexander's mastery is evident in the cupboard and the general configuration of the galley. Typical Ocean Alexander has an open area with bar chairs and a wide pass. Beyond is a warm, inviting lounge area with an L-shaped sofa for casual dining or a cup of coffee. A pop-up flat-screen TV separates the adjacent rudder station to the starboard side.
Each of the four guest booths has an en-suite hood with marble countertops and floors. The rooms, separated by master handmade bunits, oversized windows, a love chair, a walk-in closet, a separate padlock across the room and a shower, are extremely elegant. The room is well insulated against noise and while on the go, the sound recorded in the master bedroom is only 58 decibels.
Ocean Alexander calls the upper deck to a technically correct end bridge that will sell itself almost short. The deck area has a surprisingly large volume and the visibility is excellent. There is a hot tub, reclining armchairs, an elegantly sloping bar and a grill area.
Ocean Alexander also offers an OA 100 skylounge version that operates the bottom rudder for a private table, adding a flamboyant second lounge area, complete with a large terrace area behind the top rudder station of the three-seater chair.
