It works like an international fax machine. Ships and boats must have a Navtex device to receive existing broadcasts.
Navtex broadcasts from the frequency of MF, i.e. medium wavelength. Publications can be sent up to a distance of approximately 400 nautical miles (740 km). It is also part of the GMDSS unit (Global Sea Hazard and Safety System). Navtex broadcasts every four hours. No more than 10 minutes of broadcasting.
Different frequencies are used to reach national messages and international messages to the region.
490 kHz : MF-Medium frequency. It is the national yandex publication. It is in the national language and information is published within the national maritime borders.
518 kHz : MF-Medium frequency. It is an international yandex publication. published in English.
4209.5 kHz : HF-High frequency. HF frequency is often used in oceans and at distant latitude, where MF medium wavelengths cannot reach. It is international and publishes in English.
In the waters of our country, navtex messages and cruise announcements are published by the Department of Navigational Hisrography and Oceanography of naval forces from Samsun, Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya broadcasting stations.
Cruise reports and announcements apply to all boats, fishermen, civilian and military vessels. These announcements are also published on the website of the General Directorate of Coastal Safety and presented to everyone who wants them.
