What is hypothermia?

In order for people to live their lives, their body temperature must remain between certain values. Too high or too low body temperature can have permanent negative effects on a person or it can be fatal. The cold effect can attract the body's core temperature to low levels and cause hypothermia, a very dangerous result.

If you are cruising in a cold sea, the biggest danger in any undesirable situation will be the effect of hypothermia, not drowning. Hypothermia is a dangerous drop in body temperature due to cold. The lower the temperature of the water, the higher the hypothermia effect. Materials such as neoprene try to maintain body temperature if wet and have a retardant effect on hypothermia. Synthetic substances can't protect a person in water, so they can't insulate them.

The most heat loss is from the head area. A woolly beret is absolutely necessary when cruising in cold weather. But of course it shouldn't get wet from the water. Hypothermia can occur both when a person is out of water and in the water, but it is much more likely to occur in the water. If we've fallen into the water and we're conscious, it's imperative that we wait by trying to keep all or all of our heads out of the water, reducing our heat loss.

The following chart is taken from the USCG boat security research archive.

As shown in the chart;

At -1 degrees, there seems to be no survival time in the water.

He's entering the danger limit at five degrees without even an hour.

The risk of hypothermia starts after an hour at 10 degrees.

At 15 degrees Celsius, there is no risk of hypothermia in water for 2 hours.

Prevention of Hypothermia

Hypothermia begins when the body temperature drops below 34.4 degrees Celsius. The first symptoms will be tremors. If the body temperature continues to drop, the tremor will end and a significant power reduction occurs. At that moment, a rescued person can't walk or use his hands. blood pressure and heart waste do not occur at the next stage and cause death.

* YOU SHOULD NOT SWIM TO PROLONG THE SURVIVAL PERIOD WHILE IN WATER.

* TO MINIMIZE HEAT LOSS IN WATER, KNEES SHOULD BE PULLED UPWARDS AND THE SURFACE OF THE BODY SHOULD BE TRIED TO BE THE SMALLEST.

How should the first intervention be made?

THE PERSON RESCUED FROM THE WATER SHOULD NOT BE WARMED UP IN A SLOW AND WARM WAY. PLENTY OF WATER SHOULD BE GIVEN. GIVING DRINKS CONTAINING CAFFEINE MAY BE DANGEROUS
